Ryerson operates several highly specialized coil processing facilities. Some focus on carbon flat rolled products, while others specialize in the processing of stainless, nickel alloy and aluminum products. Our sheet & coil processing helps: Cold Roll Carbon Sheet Polishing - Image ResultsCold rolled finishes apply to flat products such as sheet or coil, with thickness less than about 5mm and usually less than 3mm. They are firstly hot rolled into a strip (or cast into a slab which is hot rolled into a strip) and then cold rolled. Cold rolling reduces the thickness by at least 50%. This smooths the surface, refines the grain structure and causes differences in the mechanical properties along and across the rolling direction.

Difference Between Hot and Cold Rolled Steel | Metal SupermarketsPolishing improves surface finish. All cold products provide a superior surface finish, and are superior in tolerance, concentricity, and straightness when compared to hot rolled. Cold finished bars are typically harder to work with than hot rolled due to the increased carbon content. Hot Rolled Steel | Sheet Metal Supplier | Metalwest
Hot rolled steel is the most basic form of carbon steel product produced by the steel mill and is applied to applications where surface finish is not critical. The process to create hot rolled steel begins with heating slabs of steel to a high temperature. When the hot material is transferred from the furnace it reacts with the oxygen in the air. Hot Rolled vs Cold Rolled Steel | Metal Casting BlogCold rolled steel is often used to describe a range of finishing processes, though technically cold rolled applies only to sheets that undergo compression between rollers. Steel forms that are pulled, such as bars or tubes, are drawn, not rolled. Other cold finishing processes include turning, grinding, and polishingeach of which is used to modify existing hot rolled stock into more refined products.
